Zigfrids "Zig" O. Mikelsons, 78, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

A son of the late Bruno and Sophia (Sudjins) Mikelsons, Zig was born in Riga Latvia on Oct. 11, 1931.

He immigrated to the United States in 1947 and moved to Conshohocken in 1960.

He resided at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown for the past two and a half years.

He graduated from Penn State University in Philadelphia with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and he was also a graduate of the University's continuing education program for professional engineering.

He was a retired vice president of engineering with Beaumont Birch Company of Pennsauken, N.J. His contributions, leadership and direction were significant to Beaumont Birch.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with honor with the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1955, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Conshohocken for 50 years.

He was a member and past master of Fritz Lodge 380 F & A.M. of Conshohocken.

He was an active member with the Masonic Lodge in Elizabethtown for the past two years.

Zig was a past assistant scout master with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 140 of Conshohocken.

He was a board member of the Conshohocken Free Library.

He was also a member of the Chapel of Four Chaplains.

He was the husband of the late Helen (Lite) Mikelsons who passed away in 2009.

He is survived by a son Ronald J. (Sue) Mikelsons of Eagleville; a daughter Silvia (Gary) Rotenbury of Plymouth Meeting; four grandchildren: Matthew and Lauren Rottenbury and Christina, Katie and Ronald Mikelsons; a sister Brigita Gillespie of Vineland, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Zig will be held Friday, July 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 5th Avenue and Harry Street, Conshohocken. Pastor Richard Olsen will be officiating. A Masonic service will be held at 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Friends may call Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be held at Gulph Christian Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
